The rich agricultural soils of Soča and Vipava Valleys of western Slovenia and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region of north eastern Italian region are characterised by highly intensive farming practice and long historical agricultural traditions. Known widely for quality wines recent diversification into maize for silage, peach orchards, lucernes and winter wheat patterns the current landscape. The indiscriminate application of herbicides, pesticides and over application of nitrogenous fertilizers have impacted on critical ground and surface water resources resulting in polluted soil-water systems and aquatic and wetland ecosystems.
It is, therefore, imperative that grass root educational enhancement is implemented in order to understand and redress pollutant impact and resulting environmental degradation.
